With 15 years of experience performing endodontic treatment in Silver Spring and Bowie, RCT Endodontics know that no patient likes to hear the term "root canal." Misinformation concerning root canal treatment has led to many misconceptions about the procedure. Our endodontists can perform root canal therapy that is simple, painless and free of hassles, with the result of treatment meaning sparing our patients from tooth loss.
What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a treatment that involves removing the material inside of the teeth known as the pulp. Pulp is gently removed from the inside of the tooth via the creation of a small opening at the top or side of the tooth. After the infected material and the pulp is removed, the tooth is then filled with a material called “gutta percha” to provide a seal in the tooth. Lastly, a crown is placed over top to protect and restore your tooth’s appearance in your smile.
What Do Root Canals Treat?
At our office in Silver Spring and Bowie, we perform root canal treatment to address numerous conditions. A root canal can be used in cases of severe tooth decay, to repair cracks in the teeth, to save teeth following an emergency, and to remove diseased or infected pulp.
How Do I Know if I Need a Root Canal?
Only an endodontist can tell for certain if you need a root canal treatment, but some symptoms that you may have an infection or a condition that could benefit from root canal therapy include:
• Chronic pain in a tooth
• Sensitivity to heat or cold
• Swelling around one particular tooth
• Pimple or bump that forms on the gums above or below a tooth
Why Should I Consider Root Canal Treatment?
Having a root canal performed by an experienced endodontist could mean the difference between losing your tooth and keeping it. When a condition that requires treatment is allowed to progress without intervention, it will likely worsen, making tooth loss unavoidable. In the case of infections, the problem can spread to the jaw and to the surrounding teeth, leading to widespread tooth loss and more severe problems.
Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?
Many people mistakenly believe that root canals are painful, uncomfortable procedures, however many root canal patients report that it feels no different than receiving a standard dental filling. At RCT Endodontics, we have many options available in our Bowie and Silver Spring offices to keep you comfortable throughout every step of the root canal procedure. We'll do everything we can to put you at ease and perform the treatment as quickly as possible.
